Winterised CBD Oil

Winterised CBD Oil is is a concentrated CBD extract has had plant lipids and waxes removed through the process of winterisation.

Winterisation of CBD Oil

CBD Oil is extracted from hemp or medicinal cannabis, typically using a solvent such as ethanol, supercritical CO2, or a hydrocarbon such as butane or propane.

After extraction with SCO2 or hydrocarbons, crude hemp oil contains significant quantities of lipids and waxes. To further refine CBD and other compounds for therapeutic use, these impurities are removed through a process called winterisation.

Winterisation involves dissolving crude oil in warm ethanol, then chilling it to cause precipitation of lipids and waxes, which can then be removed by filtration. Other impurities such as pigments (eg chlorophyll) are also removed through other refinement steps.

The resultant product – Winterised CBD Oil – is higher in CBD,  clearer and lighter in colour – typically a dark clear amber colour. Winterised CBD oil is also more stable and easier to work with in formulations.
